The winners will be announced in a virtual ceremony Oct. 7. (Update)

The Religion News Association has named five Christian Chronicle journalists as finalists in the 2021 RNA Awards for Religion Reporting Excellence.

The awards recognize top journalism in secular and religious publications.

The Chronicle finalists are:

• Bobby Ross Jr., Cheryl Mann Bacon, Chellie Ison and Hamil Harris, for the Gerald A. Renner Award for Excellence in Religion Enterprise Reporting. That team covered the faith response to George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis police custody last year, producing a series of videos and stories.

• Bobby Ross Jr., for Excellence in Magazine and Non-Daily Newspaper Religion Reporting. Ross reported on the faith-based response to deadly Tennessee tornadoes, the protests and prayers that followed George Floyd’s death and a Texas couple’s decision to forgive the men who murdered their daughter.

• Erik Tryggestad, for Excellence in Magazine and Non-Daily Newspaper Religion Reporting. Tryggestad’s stories ranged from the “African ‘Shark Tank’” in Ghana to the difficulty Black churches face acquiring loans to Christian care homes’ struggle during the “long, lonely lockdown.”
