Detroit-area congregation extends a warm welcome to a visitor.

DETROIT — I woke up in my happy place Sunday: close to a major league ballpark.
While in the Motor City reporting a story, I saw my beloved Texas Rangers play the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
But before donning my blue Texas cap, I put on a black dress shirt and made my way to the Lake Orion Church of Christ, about 40 miles north of Detroit.
If that sounds like a long drive to worship, my Uber driver thought so, too.
I had a special reason for visiting the 50-member congregation: The Christian Chronicle’s podcast host, B.T. Irwin, lives in the Detroit area and was preaching that Lord’s Day.
I arrived at the church midway through Bible class. I figured I’d just wait in the foyer for the assembly to start. But the greeter at the front door insisted no one would mind if I slipped into class late.
Teacher Larry Stewart was speaking on Restoration Movement history and offered fascinating details on our fellowship’s roots. If Stewart’s name sounds familiar, he has served Rochester Christian in various roles for half a century.
He recognized me and introduced me to the class. A number of the Lake Orion brothers and sisters mentioned reading the Chronicle and enjoying it.
This column appears in the June print edition of The Christian Chronicle.
